Elements and Principles of Design

Description: This assignment we were challenged to take twelve photographs that represent the elements and principles of design. I took my pictures all over from my apartment, on Northern's campus, in the car, and even in a school. In groups we compiled our pictures together creating a Kahoot that challenged the rest of the class to decide which pictures represented each element and principle of art. The link to the Kahoot: https://play.kahoot.it/v2/?quizId=f56a3623-59a7-404e-ba4b-4044620ba81e.

This picture of Gerber represents symmetry or balance because if you split the building into half it would be the same on each side.
The picture of my mom passing another car represents movement because you can see her car is on the other side of the road moving quickly to pass the car.
The compass on my candle warmer shows emphasis because when I look at the warmer the first thing that catches my eye is the compass.
My Disney backpack has a pattern of daisies and polka dots on the front of the bag.
The bricks on this wall show texture because I can see just by looking at this picture that if I were to touch the bricks they would not feel smooth.

Extension Activity: Students could print out their pictures they took and find a partner in the class. The partner would have to decide which element or principle of design is represented in the pictures. This way the students would have to learn the definitions of each element and principle and be able to apply it to their partners pictures. This may be challenging because some pictures may be able to represent more than one element, it would be exciting to watch the children decipher each photograph.

My footprint introduction

Description: I have multiple symbols on my footprint that represent me. The suitcase sticker represents my love for traveling and my trip to California this summer. I have very sensitive eyes, so I am almost always wearing sunglasses when I am outside. The Mickey Mouse made from puff balls represents my love for Disney. I drew a boat because I love going to the lake and spending time on the water. I love reading so I drew a book. I shop at Target all the time, so I have the Target Bullseye logo. I have the Hydro Flask logo because I am always carrying my water bottle. Lastly, I have the Apple logo because I have a lot of Apple products.

Extension Activity: I think a great extension activity for this project would be to assign the students a partner and they must trace their partner completely. The students would need really long paper, but it would be a fun way for the students to learn more about each other. The teacher would assign each person a partner and they would have to trace and take note of as much information as they can about their partner. Then they would be given time to work on their partners silhouette. Inside the silhouette the students will have to write information about their partner, they could write interesting facts or use symbols. After a few days of work the students would go in front of the class and present their partner's silhouette. To end the assignment the students would write a journal entry on what they learned about their partner from this activity.
